The lecture “the Mycenaean civilization: legends and archaeology” at the Yellow River civilization center’s, graduate students in archaeology and Chinese history attended the lecture. The lecture was presided over by Mr. Hu Zhiqiang of the Yellow River civilization center.
Alexander Westra began by introducing the general background of the Greek Bronze Age, explained the origin of “Mycenaean”, and gave a wonderful explanation of the chronology and geographical scope of Mycenaean civilization. After a detailed interpretation of Mycenaean myths and archaeological findings from Homer’s epic poem, linear script B, the Trojan war, the myth of navigation and the ruins of Mycenaean city, Alexander Westra pointed out that archaeology and myth may not be a perfect match, and we should carefully consider how to study myths and legends with archaeology, and be careful in our research process.
The speaker gave the teachers and students a clearer understanding of the Greek bronze civilization. The successful holding of the conference not only broadens the international vision of the teachers and students of the center, but also strengthens their understanding of the origin of Chinese and western civilizations.
