Establishing the Research Centre for Hellenic Civilisation at Henan University

In 2017, Professor Ioannis Liritzis and Professor Miao Changhong signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the University of the Aegean (School of Humanities, Dept. of Mediterranean Studies, the Laboratory of Archaeometry and the Laboratory of Environmental Archaeology) and Henan University (School of History & Culture, School of Environment & Planning, the Dept. of Geosciences, the Collaborative Innovation Center on Yellow River Civilization of Henan Province, and the Key Institute of Yellow River Civilization & Sustainable Development) with the ambition of creating a fruitful and substantial partnership.

The objective of this partnership was the outlining of key research and educational activities to be carried out jointly and coordinated through the Sino-Hellenic Academic Project. We invite to explore further this website for more information on our activities.

In September 2018, the Opening of the Research Center for Hellenic Civilisation at Henan University, Kaifeng, was made with the personal visit of His Excellency the Ambassador of Greece to China Leonidas Rokanas.

Furthermore, a specialised library with volumes in Chinese, English, and Greek began being created with many volumes already there. The library is already a focal point for all students of Henan University who wish to study Greek history and archaeology. The Center is also equipped with study spaces within the library and can host students and researchers and open to all those who wish to study the materials there.

In the course of the year, this website (huaxiahellas.com) was also created to facilitate communication and share our updates and activities.

The Center is already operational with Greek joint-doctoral student Alexander Westra (admin) and dr. Chen Chao working on the premises and coordinating much of the activity there such as courses, events, and administrative affairs. They are also teaching courses in Ancient Greek language, history and archaeology to undergraduates and masters students of Henan University and working closely with scholars in China and Greece.

In June 2019, the Research Center for Hellenic Civilization and Henan University heldd its inaugural ceremony with the attendance of Prof. Chryssi Vitsilaki, Rector of the University of the Aegean, and Prof. Lu Keping, Chancellor of Henan University, and inaugural conference, the 1st Sino-Hellenic Conference on Environment & Culture, on the grounds of the Old Campus of Henan University in Kaifeng.
